Bombardier Challenger 650: The Complete Buyer's Guide

The Short Version
The Bombardier Challenger 650 is the latest evolution of the legendary Challenger 600 series — a lineage stretching back to 1980 with over 1,100 aircraft built. It flies 4,000 nautical miles at Mach 0.82, carries up to 12 passengers in one of the widest cabins in its class. Pre-owned examples trade between $8M and $22M.

What Makes the Challenger 650 Different
1. The widest cabin under $40M
At 7'11" wide, the Challenger 650 has the widest cabin of any aircraft in its price range. Wider than the G280, Praetor 600, and Citation Longitude. That translates to genuine shoulder room, real flat-floor comfort.
2. Proven, bulletproof platform
The CF34 engines are among the most reliable powerplants in aviation. The airframe has been refined over 40+ years. Dispatch reliability exceeds 99.5%. This aircraft goes when you need it to go.
3. Versatile mission profile
4,000 NM gets you from Dubai to London, New York to LA, or Mumbai to Singapore nonstop. The Challenger 650 is designed for 4–6 hour missions done extremely well.
Who Is This Aircraft For?
- ●Regional and transcontinental operators flying 2,000–4,000 NM missions.
- ●Charter operators who value the wide cabin, brand recognition, and excellent dispatch reliability.
- ●Corporate flight departments that prioritize reliability and passenger comfort.
- ●Owners stepping up from super-midsize jets who want a wider cabin.
When It's Not the Right Fit
- ●The 41,000 ft ceiling is lower than large-cabin jets (51,000 ft), meaning more exposure to weather and traffic.
- ●If you need 5,000+ NM range, look at the Global 5500, G500, or Falcon 2000LXS.

The Pre-Owned Market Right Now
Market research reviewed October 8, 2026. Figures below retain their source dates and measurement basis.
Market reviewed October 8, 2026. Holstein's August 2026 snapshot shows three Challenger 650s for sale, 1.6% of its 183-aircraft tracked fleet, 26 sales over the preceding 12 months and four months of absorption. JetsIntel's September market database lists seven aircraft; the different source populations and dates should not be added together.
A concrete public price reference is Donath's 2016 Challenger 650, serial 6084, advertised on GlobalAir at $18.995M, with 5,556 hours and a listing update of October 5, 2026. The portal also shows a 2020 aircraft on a price-on-request basis. These are seller offers, not closed transactions.
Duncan Aviation's July 2026 Vref model-wide valuation span is $15.54M–$34M, covering its listed vintages and including much newer aircraft at the upper end. AIR.ONE lists a $32.4M base new-aircraft reference, which is a catalog figure rather than a current equipped quote.
Our reading: availability is thin relative to Holstein's fleet and sales figures, so the 650 should be approached as a selective market rather than one with broad, interchangeable inventory. The $18.995M example anchors an older aircraft; it does not set the price of a low-hour late model. A buyer's strongest comparison is with another aircraft of similar age, layout and maintenance position.

What to Watch For When Buying
1. CF34 Engine Program Enrollment
GE's OnPoint program provides predictable engine costs. Aircraft not enrolled may face significant overhaul exposure. A CF34 hot section inspection runs approximately $600K–$800K; full overhaul can reach $1.5M per engine.
2. APU Status
The Honeywell APU is essential for ground operations. APU overhaul costs can run $200K–$350K. Check time remaining and program enrollment.
3. Interior and Connectivity
Early Challenger 650s may have basic connectivity. Modern expectations require at least Gogo AVANCE L5 or equivalent. Connectivity retrofits run $200K–$500K.
4. Landing Gear Overhaul
A significant scheduled event — typically $400K–$600K. Review maintenance status carefully and factor proximity into your valuation.
5. 605 vs. 650 Differentiation
The 650 features updated flight deck with synthetic vision, improved cabin management, and enhanced connectivity. Don't pay 650 prices for a 605.
Challenger 650 vs. The Competition
| Aircraft | Range | Max Speed | Cabin W | Cabin L | Pax | New Price | Pre-Owned |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gulfstream G280 | 3,600 NM | Mach 0.84 | 7'2" | 25'10" | 8–10 | ~$24.5M (historical) | ~$10M (historical) |
| Embraer Praetor 600 | 4,018 NM | Mach 0.83 | 6'9" | 27'6" | 8–12 | ~$21M (historical) | ~$18M (historical) |
| Dassault Falcon 2000LXS | 4,000 NM | Mach 0.862 | 7'8" | 26'2" | 8–10 | ~$36M (historical) | ~$8M (historical) |
Gulfstream G280
Embraer Praetor 600
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS
vs. Gulfstream G280
The Challenger has a significantly wider (7'11") and longer cabin (28'5"), plus more range. The G280 counters with better short-field performance.
vs. Embraer Praetor 600
The Praetor matches range with a more modern airframe. But the cabin is narrower and the pre-owned market is much smaller.
vs. Dassault Falcon 2000LXS
Similar range and cabin width, with excellent short-field performance. The Challenger counters with a wider cabin and greater fleet support.
